George Earthy, the big West Ham talent given a painful Premier League debut

By Roshane Thomas

To understand why David Moyes and academy coaches at West Ham United think highly of George Earthy, a good starting point would be January 24, 2023.

That was the day the talented midfielder scored in the 89th minute against Burnley Under-18s to send West Ham to the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup. Earthy was one of the players who Mark Robson, the former under-21s manager and now first-team coach, reported favourably back to Moyes.

“It was a freezing night with me, his mum (Ann) and others,” said Paul Earthy, the midfielder’s father. “We made the four-hour drive up there after work and it looked like it was going to extra time. Then he scored in the 89th minute and I started screaming — that’s how happy I was.

“I had to apologise to the Burnley parents after, but it was such a great moment. I was buzzing! The adrenaline was brilliant. We got home at 1am — and I had work at 4am. I was knackered but it’s probably my favourite memory.”

West Ham’s conveyor belt of young talent has its latest star in Earthy. This season, the 19-year-old, who joined the academy aged five, has scored 12 goals and registered 10 assists across 24 appearances for the under-21s. His progress led to a first-team debut in March in the 5-0 win against Freiburg and a Premier League debut in the 2-0 loss to Fulham. But the Fulham game came with drama. Three minutes after replacing Michail Antonio in the 82nd minute, Earthy sustained a head injury following a clash of heads with team-mate Edson Alvarez.

Earthy was assisted by West Ham and Fulham’s medical team for eight minutes after players from both sides immediately raised concerns. After the delay, he was taken off the pitch on a stretcher with an oxygen mask and a neck brace. The midfielder was conscious as he left the London Stadium in an ambulance with his family.

“I’m really disappointed for George,” said Moyes. “He’s been doing really well in training and has performed great for the under-21s. He’s been getting much closer to the first team.

“He started well when he came on and had some nice touches. He’s awake and has gone to hospital so we’ll get the checks done. We all thought that (he was knocked out cold) just being on the touchline.

“George is a terrific footballer and a great little technician. If we had the right moments, we probably would’ve tried to get him on sooner. He did not let himself down in the time he was on the field.”

Earthy will aim for another appearance once he recovers. The midfielder first signed a professional deal in June 2022, but was rewarded with an improved deal 15 months later, which expires in 2026. Last month, he joined academy graduates Divin Mubama, Kaelan Casey and Ollie Scarles by featuring in Europe this season.

“I’ve been working for it a long time — my whole life pretty much — so to make my debut, I’m absolutely buzzing,” he said. “At 4-0, the manager told ‘Ingsy’ (Danny Ings) and Kalvin Phillips to get ready and stripped, and I’m sitting there thinking it might not be me today. But then he turned around and said my name, and when we were waiting on the touchline he just said, ‘Enjoy it and go and play your stuff’. I’ve got to keep working hard, hopefully get as many chances as I can, but it was a very special moment for me and my family. I want to keep it going now.”

Earthy, who can play in wide areas, central midfield or as a No 10, has represented England’s junior teams at under-15 and under-16 level. He is the youngest of three boys, behind his older brothers James and William.

“I would come home from work and George and his brothers would be playing in the garden,” said Paul. “He’s broken a few windows over the years. We’d attend friends’ barbecues and sometimes he’d kick the ball through their greenhouse window. Then I would have to go back and fix the damage!

“Me and his mother would take turns dropping off and picking him up from training. One weekend, I didn’t make it to one of his games and his nan phoned me after to say a man had left his card and wanted me to ring him. It was West Ham scout Jim Hampsheir, who I’m still good friends with. I phoned him and he arranged a one-week trial for George to come down at Chadwell Heath. He joined when he was five, and look how far he’s come.”

Manchester City reluctant to meet West Ham’s Lucas Paquetá release clause

According to Foot Mercato, Manchester City wants to reach an agreement with West Ham for midfielder Lucas Paquetá (26) without meeting the release clause which is thought to be worth €85 million.

The two clubs had previously agreed to a deal for the player last summer, with City at time willing to meet the clause for the former Olympique Lyonnais midfielder. However, the deal broke down at the last minute after the FA revealed that they had begun an investigation into the player for alleged betting breaches.

It has since been reported that City have remained interested in the Brazilian international with personal terms having already been agreed upon for a move to City at the end of the season.
Lucas Paquetá remains vital for West Ham despite ongoing investigation

All that remains is a deal to be forged with West Ham who will be reluctant to lose a player that has become vital for the side since his move from Ligue 1 for less than his release clause.

Re: Tuesday news (includes West Ham)
I’d say City were hoping Philips proves himself to be a £35m plus player and then involved in the Paqueta deal,

Now they have to stump up the whole £85m and still have Phillips ok the books.

Surely, no matter how infatuated with top 4 players Moyes is, we ain’t signing him
